The group had already arrived at Zhang Yi's doorstep, sheltering themselves under umbrellas. However, the Dragon Security Company had installed an unusually large number of pinhole cameras on this floor. From various angles, the cameras captured every move the visitors made.

As the group gathered at the door, Zhang Yi noticed one of them pulling out several shiny metal tools from his pocket. The man then began probing the keyhole of Zhang Yi’s security door.

“Trying to pick the lock?” Zhang Yi raised an eyebrow, but remained unconcerned. If his door could be so easily pried open, the professionals at Dragon Security Company might as well eat dirt.

This door wasn’t just world-class in security—equivalent to a bank vault—it was reinforced with five additional layers of defense. To open the outermost lock, only a locksmith of the highest caliber stood a chance. Not to mention the physical levers installed inside.

The more complex the mechanism, the simpler the method to break it—yet simple methods couldn’t handle it. Take Zhang Yi’s door, for example.

Since Zhang Yi had no intention of leaving initially, the door was barricaded from the inside with a solid steel rod ten centimeters in diameter. Unless a car repeatedly rammed into it, no human force could break it down.

Moreover, Zhang Yi had anticipated attempts to pry the door and had installed a special defense mechanism.

Watching the surveillance feed on TV, Zhang Yi pulled out his phone and launched the security system’s control app. With a gentle tap, he activated a button.

Instantly, a powerful electric current surged through the security door.

Lu Tao, who was focused on picking the lock, let out a harrowing scream as the electricity coursed through his body.

The companions nearby turned pale with fear and quickly stepped back.

“Help… help me!” Lu Tao pleaded in agony, his face contorted in pain.

The electric current gripped him like a vice, unyielding.

Fang Yuqing, Zhou Peng, and the others stood dumbfounded. They hadn’t expected this and had no proper insulation tools at hand.

Soon, smoke began rising from Lu Tao’s body, accompanied by the acrid smell of burning flesh.

With a loud thud, he collapsed to the ground. His clothes were charred and shredded, his skin on his arms and face carbonized.

It was clear he wouldn’t survive.

“Ah!!!” Fang Yuqing, Lin Caining, and the others screamed in horror.

Witnessing someone die before their eyes was a devastating blow.

Inside the room, Zhang Yi’s lips curled into a faint smile. Strangely, he felt a sense of satisfaction.

But who could they blame? They had dared to set their sights on Zhang Yi—that was their doom.

Wang Min and the others shuddered in terror as their plan to break in collapsed.

Sun Zhichao and Lu Tao had been close friends for years. Seeing his brother die so gruesomely, fiery rage burned in Sun Zhichao’s eyes.

“Zhang Yi, you bastard! Get out here right now!” he shouted, grabbing a shovel and pounding it against Zhang Yi’s massive door.

The sound reverberated through several floors.

However, the enormous iron door showed no dents or damage. Beneath the peeling paint lay thick alloy steel.

Zhang Yi appeared at the door, hands in his pockets, a mocking smile playing on his lips.

“Trying to break into my place? Aren’t you just asking for death?” he said with a shake of his head. “Hey, isn’t it better to stay alive?”

Hearing Zhang Yi’s taunts, the group outside grew both furious and alarmed.

Wang Min shouted, “Zhang Yi, we came here hoping to discuss living arrangements amicably. How could you kill someone?”

“You’re worse than Chen Zhenghao—you’re a murderous demon!”

Hearing a woman’s voice, Zhang Yi realized these were not Chen Zhenghao’s people.

Yet, having killed Lu Tao, he felt no regret; such people deserved their fate.

Then it dawned on him who they were—surely Fang Yuqing, Lin Caining, and their group.

After all, only they knew how comfortable Zhang Yi’s home was.

His expression darkened as he scornfully retorted, “Who do you think you’re fooling? You came here to smash my door and seize my house. You deserve to die!”

“And you still have the nerve to bark like dogs here? That’s laughable!”

Feigning calm, Sun Zhichao said, “Zhang Yi, we mean no harm. We just want to talk.”

“But you didn’t even warn us before killing our brother Lu Tao. That’s way too much! Don’t you owe us an explanation?”

Zhang Yi burst out laughing.

“You just want to talk? Coming uninvited and trying to pick my lock—that’s your idea of a chat?”

“Hmph. Once you get through the door, the next step is probably to kill me or drive me out to fend for myself.”

“And then you’d enjoy the safe house I worked so hard to prepare, right?”

The group exchanged glances; indeed, that was their plan.

Sun Zhichao’s brows furrowed deeper. The brutal death of his brother fueled his hatred for Zhang Yi.

Still, their priority now was how to break in.

He took a deep breath and shouted, “Zhang Yi, this is your last chance! Open the door and let us in, or the consequences will be more than you can handle!”

Fang Yuqing added, “Zhang Yi, we won’t harm you. We just want to live together and face the catastrophe as one. Don’t mistake our goodwill!”

Lin Caining chimed in, “Yeah, at worst you can have the master bedroom and we’ll share the supplies with you!”

They were all highly emotional.

Just beyond that wall lay paradise—they had been waiting for this moment for a long time.

Zhang Yi scoffed at their words.

“Are you out of your mind? This house has always been mine, yet you act like owners dividing it up.”

“Show me if you have the guts. Let’s see if you can break in!”

As he spoke, Zhang Yi’s hands were far from idle.

He had loaded his pistol and held a crossbow ready.

The hunt was about to begin.

Watching through the surveillance, he could see everything outside clearly, even overhearing their whispered conversations.

Sun Zhichao and the others huddled together, plotting their next move.

Among them, the most timid, Ge Jialiang, nervously asked, “What now? With Lu Tao dead, no one can pick the lock. Should we retreat? We don’t want to attract Chen Zhenghao’s attention.”

Sun Zhichao cursed, “Afraid of what? This is the 24th floor. Even if Chen Zhenghao and his crew climb up here, they’ll be exhausted. If they want to loot or kill, they’ll target the lower floors first.”

Wang Min’s expression grew grave. “Zhang Yi is truly hard to deal with. He seems to have known the apocalypse was coming and prepared thoroughly.”
