Chapter 9: The Super Warehouse
The issue with the gun was more or less settled, and Zhang Yi felt considerably relieved. In the apocalypse, having such a weapon gave him immense confidence, whether facing humans or non-human creatures.
The next day, Zhang Yi packed some important belongings into his personal space. Since he planned to convert his house into a safe room, he would temporarily move to a hotel.
Early in the morning, three black vans pulled into the Yuelu residential complex. A large group of workers from Dragon Battle Company, dressed in uniforms, got out and began measuring Zhang Yi’s house.
Many neighbors watched curiously. “Has Zhang Yi lost his mind lately? Why is he always up to some weird stuff?”
Several colleagues joked, “Yeah, just a few days ago I saw him at the supermarket buying three carts full of food!”
“Ha! You’d think the world’s ending with all that hoarding. Isn’t it just going to expire and go to waste?”
“Maybe he’s got some mental issues!”
Everyone found Zhang Yi’s strange behavior baffling but didn’t really care; they just treated him as a joke. Even Fang Yuqing and Lin Caining thought Zhang Yi had lost his mind.
Lin Caining said with sudden realization, “I finally get it. No wonder he went to that Michelin three-star restaurant the other day. He must be crazy!”
Fang Yuqing frowned, feeling especially displeased. She recalled how she had gone out of her way to strike up a conversation with Zhang Yi and helped him carry so many things home that her feet felt weak—only to be left with a bad taste in her mouth.
“What on earth is Zhang Yi up to?” she wondered.
Lin Caining voiced her concern, “He promised to treat us to a big meal. I hope he hasn’t forgotten.”
She had been eagerly looking forward to dining at a Michelin three-star restaurant.
Fang Yuqing scoffed, “Forget it! With the way he’s been acting lately, even if he invited me, I wouldn’t go. Imagine if people found out we were eating with him—how embarrassing!”
She planned to marry into wealth someday and couldn’t afford to ruin her reputation.
Though Lin Caining felt reluctant, she had no choice but to give up after hearing Fang Yuqing’s words.
Meanwhile, Zhang Yi was completely indifferent to what his neighbors thought. They would find out who the real joke was in less than a month.
Zhang Yi left his home and drove to the Walmart warehouse. It was Monday, time for work. He also intended to scout the warehouse carefully to prepare for the time he would make his move.
The Walmart warehouse was located in the Economic Development Zone, on the outskirts of Tianhai City. Land prices were cheaper here, so many large corporations had their warehouses clustered in this area, including some pharmaceutical companies.
This made it convenient for Zhang Yi to obtain some special medicines later.
Upon arrival, Zhang Yi clocked in as usual. As the warehouse supervisor, he was extremely familiar with the place. He knew every warehouse and every shelf like the back of his hand.
Normally, he found working here incredibly dull. But today, seeing the massive warehouses and supplies worth tens or even hundreds of billions, he couldn’t suppress his excitement.
Soon, all these goods would be his, serving as vital resources for surviving the apocalypse.
As Walmart’s main warehouse in South China, the volume of supplies was beyond anyone’s imagination. Just the stock of cola alone numbered in the tens of thousands of cases!
The warehouse covered over a million square meters, packed full of all kinds of daily necessities: food, clothing, hardware tools, even cars, drones, diesel generators, and barrels of gasoline.
In short, anything allowed to be sold in a supermarket could be found here.
Having worked here for years, Zhang Yi knew exactly what was on each shelf. He was also well aware of the shift schedules and surveillance camera placements.
Though the security cameras were tight, Zhang Yi knew their weak points intimately. He could disable the entire surveillance system within ten minutes and use his spatial abilities to take everything he needed.
But for now, Zhang Yi didn’t rush to act. Time was on his side, and he didn’t want to alert anyone prematurely.
After strolling through the warehouse, he left and headed next door to the Ruining Pharmaceutical Company’s warehouse.
Because he worked nearby, Zhang Yi was fairly familiar with the staff there.
He found the warehouse manager, Zhou Hairun. They had a good understanding of each other.
In big corporations, there were always people who exploited their positions. Zhou Hairun’s brother-in-law was the vice president of Ruining Group, and Zhou often stole medicines from the warehouse to sell on the side.
Zhang Yi chatted with Zhou casually, then hinted at his true purpose: hoping to acquire several boxes of special medicine for urgent illnesses.
At first, Zhou was wary. But when Zhang Yi offered to pay double market price for the drugs, Zhou couldn’t resist.
They finalized the deal at three million yuan for five large boxes of medicine.
For an ordinary person, even a lifetime’s worth of illnesses wouldn’t consume half of that.
With the medicines secured, Zhang Yi had basically prepared all the supplies he needed for the apocalypse.
With less than a month remaining, he had little desire to continue working.
He went to the warehouse manager’s office and lied that an elderly relative from his hometown had passed away, needing to take twenty days off to attend the funeral.
Zhang Yi was well-liked and had a good relationship with his manager, so despite the unusual length of the request, it was granted without difficulty.
In the coming days, he planned to relax comfortably in a five-star hotel while waiting for his purchased goods to arrive and the safe room to be completed.
As he walked out of the manager’s office, he happened to see Fang Yuqing bent over at the coffee machine, pouring herself a cup.
It had to be said, this woman had some innate charm—a hint of coquettishness in her bones.
Even while pouring coffee, she swayed her petite hips, attracting some young men who eagerly vied for her attention.
Nearby, a man with a broad smile invited Fang Yuqing to a Zhou Jielun concert, flaunting his tickets.
This man was Zhou Peng, someone Zhang Yi remembered well because they lived in the same neighborhood.
He was Fang Yuqing’s loyal admirer, and among those who had contributed to Zhang Yi’s past misfortunes, he was one of them.
