Zhang Zhengde stood frozen on the spot.

A Level 3 Finisher?!

Hadn't the Level 3 Finisher sent for support already arrived?

Zhang Zhengde's expression changed drastically as realization dawned on him. He immediately shouted to the person in charge on site, “Quick! Check if there was any temporary external support assigned for this mission!”

The person in charge hurriedly operated the tablet and soon came back with the information: “There was… a temporary support sent by Department Three. The name is Xia Shou. It seems he just joined today…”

“Enough of these useless details! Just tell me his rank and anomaly level!” Zhang Zhengde barked.

“He’s only a Level 1 Supernatural, and his ability hasn’t been registered,” the person in charge replied in an increasingly low voice.

Upon hearing this, Zhang Zhengde felt as if his head was about to explode.

Is this supposed to be support? Or just a pure suicide mission?

Investigating anything involving Department Three always spells trouble!

“Damn it!” Zhang Zhengde took out his phone and immediately called his superior.

After a few busy signals, a stern male voice answered, “Hello?”

Taking a deep breath, Zhang Zhengde suppressed his anger and reported as calmly as he could, “Minister, Shangguan Yan sent someone to support us. Are you aware?”

“I already know about this.”

“Does she know what mission we’re carrying out? She actually sent a newly recruited Level 1 combatant! You must understand that every person the Blood Demon House devours increases the danger! Shangguan Yan sending someone like this is not only irresponsible for her subordinate’s life but also jeopardizes the safety of our entire team!”

“Boss, we can’t keep letting Shangguan Yan…”

“This assignment was approved by the Deputy Director. Are you questioning his judgment?” the man cut him off coldly.

“…No, I didn’t mean that, but… but,” Zhang Zhengde realized he had overstepped, yet his fury remained.

“Old Zhang, I’ve already briefed the Beastmaster on this. Since Shangguan Yan sends her people over as cannon fodder, we might as well make use of them. If we devour them before the House does, even the weakest fodder can become an asset to the strong. So, let them be the prey of the beasts.”

Zhang Zhengde was startled, as if he suddenly understood something. He turned his gaze toward the Beastmaster cloaked in black; though his face was hidden in shadow, Zhang Zhengde clearly sensed the Beastmaster was smiling at him.

The Beastmaster took out an apple, bit into it calmly, and said, “That person has already entered, right?”

Then he patted the black-flamed leopard at his feet. “Then let’s hurry inside as well.”

Before Xia Shou lay the vestibule he had seen in dreams—a redwood floor overhead, potted plants, a shoe cabinet, decorative partitions—all the furnishings that should have been on the ground were now above him, while the chandelier that should have hung from the ceiling floated just ahead on what was effectively the “floor.” This space was inverted; not only were the furnishings upside down, but the gravity was reversed as well.

Yet Xia Shou remained unaffected by the reversed gravity. His clothes and pants did not drift upward as expected.

This surreal scene stirred an indescribable sense of unreality within him.

He approached the chandelier, unscrewed a bulb, and released it. The bulb floated upward like a hydrogen balloon and shattered with a “bang” against the floor above, the glass shards remaining there without falling.

“Apparently, only objects brought from outside are exempt from the inverted gravity, while items originally inside the house obey the gravity direction within,” Xia Shou mused aloud, following the thickest red line beneath his feet as he moved forward.

Although every step ahead promised greater danger, Xia Shou had no intention of stopping.

Because advancing one hundred meters was the price to activate “Seeking Death,” and the sooner he paid that price, the sooner he would gain freedom. Delaying would only increase the risk.

Until the price was paid, “Seeking Death” forbade any retreat.

If an enemy appeared before the price was paid, there would be no chance to fall back or escape.

Thus, no matter how one looked at it, paying the hundred-meter price as soon as possible was the optimal strategy.

Turning past the vestibule, the ceiling beneath his feet sank like steps. Ahead, a more magnificent chandelier appeared, signaling that he had entered the living room.

A thick, pungent stench of blood assaulted his senses. Following the source, Xia Shou looked upward to see a chaotic room. In the center lay a man severed in two, lifeless and still. His uniform identified him as a Control Bureau combatant.

Shifting his gaze to the right of the corpse, Xia Shou saw a trail of fresh blood. The dragging marks told the story of the victim: he had been killed elsewhere and then dragged into this living room. This was not the original crime scene.

Xia Shou raised his hand; his fingertips were only about a meter from the corpse. The room’s height was surprisingly normal.

At the same moment, the shadow beneath his feet began to stir, as if coveting the corpse above.

“Hm? Can shadows eat human corpses too?” Xia Shou was slightly surprised.

After the shadow had devoured the wax figure earlier, he gained a skill. Surely this time he would gain something as well.

Controlling the black shadow with his mind, it spread like black mud, driven by “appetite,” crawling along the walls, from ceiling to the “floor” above, finally reaching under the corpse.

The shadow-formed swamp engulfed the two body parts in its depths, moving several times faster than before.

Simultaneously, the same bright red text appeared again in Xia Shou’s vision.
