“Tick-tock! Tick-tock!”
The stench of blood dripped from the sharp knife onto the ground, producing a steady dripping sound.
Lu Xiao stared with lifeless eyes at the unknown creature before him, lost in thought.
After a long while, he raised his hand, the knife still dripping with blood, and gestured over the lump of rotten flesh on the floor.
“Off with the head, pinch the tail! Hmm!”
A grin spread across his face.
The crimson moonlight bathed his face, casting his smile in an eerie, terrifying glow.
Just as Lu Xiao was about to feast, a clatter of footsteps reached his ears.
“Containment target spotted!”
“Repeat! Containment target spotted!”
“All squad members, prepare for combat!”
At the same time, a squad of well-equipped soldiers surrounded Lu Xiao, who was crouched on the ground.
Lu Xiao was taken aback; he scanned the circle of soldiers with dead eyes.
“You’re human?”
A hoarse voice emerged from his mouth.
The seven soldiers all wore masks, their faces hidden.
For a moment, seven dark gun barrels were pointed directly at Lu Xiao.
Drip.
Another drop of dark red blood fell from the knife in Lu Xiao’s hand.
He forced a smile he thought was charming.
“Hello! My name is—”
Bang! Bang! Bang!
Gunfire rang out one after another.
Blooms of blood erupted from Lu Xiao’s body.
“Damn?”
That was Lu Xiao’s final utterance before collapsing.
“Phew! That was terrifying!”
One soldier spoke, his voice muffled and trembling behind the mask.
“Why the hell did you open fire?”
Someone scolded sharply.
The shooter looked aggrieved.
“Captain! He was just too scary!”
He pointed his gun at Lu Xiao lying in a pool of blood.
A cruel smile still lingered on Lu Xiao’s face.
His mouth was crusted with clotted blood, his face covered in filth.
Especially those dead fish eyes—just a glance sent chills down one’s spine.
A female team member crouched down to examine him, then said heavily,
“Captain! He might be human!”
Hearing this, the captain was stunned, then took out his radio and said gravely,
“This is Dart. Containment target suspected to be human, has been neutralized! Requesting instructions!”
Silence hung over the radio for half a minute, then a roar of anger exploded.
“Human? You killed him? Bullshit!”
“If he’s human, he might be the only human in the Abyss! Do you understand his research value?”
“And you just shot him like that?”
“Damn it, why wasn’t it you guys lying there instead?”
Dart was the captain’s code name.
The squad fell silent at the voice over the radio.
They exchanged uneasy glances.
After a long pause, Dart finally said in a low voice,
“The target showed strong aggression!”
“Damn! Damn!”
The other side of the radio kept roaring.
“Bullshit! A life form without any strange traits—how aggressive could it really be?”
“If he’s human, your whole squad isn’t worth a finger of his!”
Suddenly, one female soldier made a soft sound.
“Captain! The target is still breathing!”
Dart’s expression froze.
Even the angry voice on the radio stopped abruptly.
“Quick! Bring him back now!”
“If he dies, don’t you dare come back!”
The radio went dead.
Dart snapped back to reality and shouted,
“Quick! Xiao Yu, perform emergency field treatment and stabilize his vital signs!”
“Everyone else, spread out and keep watch!”
At once, the squad members dispersed.
The soldier named Xiao Yu removed the backpack from her back.
She took out emergency medical supplies.
She glanced at Lu Xiao’s face on the ground and dropped the cotton ball in her trembling hand.
The cotton was quickly stained black by the blood and was useless.
She pulled out a fresh white medical cotton ball from her pack.
Biting her lip, she used the backpack to cover Lu Xiao’s face.
Underneath the cover, Lu Xiao’s lips twitched as he muttered to himself,
“Am I really that scary-looking?”
Xiao Yu grasped the hemostatic forceps and reached into the bullet hole that was spurting fresh blood.
Soon, she clamped a bullet out.
Suddenly, a jet of blood sprayed from the wound like a miniature fountain, splattering on Xiao Yu’s transparent mask, turning it blood-red.
Ignoring the mess, she quickly stuffed cotton into the bleeding hole.
The cotton was instantly soaked.
Gritting her teeth, she pushed the cotton deeper until the bleeding stopped, then moved on to the next wound.
Lu Xiao’s body convulsed violently from the pain, barely able to endure it.
“Captain! Abyssal index rising sharply! Something’s approaching!”
The squad’s scanner shouted.
Dart glanced at Xiao Yu, who was only on the second wound.
There were still seven bleeding bullet holes around him.
If they weren’t sealed, Lu Xiao would bleed out before they could return to base.
At that moment, Dart heard the voice in his head:
“You’re not worth a finger of his!”
His eyes flashed coldly.
“Xiao Yu! You have three more minutes! After that, we must evacuate, no matter what!”
Xiao Yu didn’t answer but focused intently on stopping the bleeding.
Her face under the mask was covered in tiny beads of sweat.
Her trembling hands betrayed her nerves.
This was the squad’s first mission.
What was supposed to be a level-5 minor operation had gone disastrously wrong.
“Captain! The Abyssal index is rising again! Danger level is now 2!”
Then Lu Xiao removed the backpack from his face.
“Hey girl! Don’t be nervous!”
“Watch, I’ll show you how it’s done!”
He reached his clawed hand into the bullet hole.
Spray!
Another gush of fresh blood blasted out.
Xiao Yu’s hand shook so badly the forceps tore the wound open again.
Blood erupted like a massive fountain.
The metallic scent of blood filled the air.
Lu Xiao wanted to sit up and say,
“I’ll do it myself!”
Just then, eerie laughter echoed through the night.
Dart glanced back and saw the scene unfold.
He sighed helplessly.
“We’re screwed!”
“Captain! The Abyssal index keeps climbing! Terrifying things are closing in! If we don’t leave now, it’ll be too late!”
Dart made a snap decision.
“The target’s lost too much blood, probably beyond saving. Abandon the target, full retreat!”
Seeing Lu Xiao’s blood spray, Dart believed he was beyond help.
Carrying a bleeding person would attract all the strange life forms nearby.
Their squad stood almost no chance of survival.
Yet the radio insisted the target was vital.
Dart hesitated briefly, then his gaze hardened.
“Even if it’s just a corpse, bring him back!”
Xiao Yu picked up the backpack, muttering softly,
“Sorry! Sorry!”
Lu Xiao smiled like a gentleman.
“I think... I can still be rescued!”
P.S.: Honestly, this book recommendation caught me off guard!
The traffic is quite overwhelming! Thanks to Tomato!
And thanks to the brothers who’ve stuck around to read!
Here, I shamelessly plead with you to keep reading. I can’t promise it’s absolutely brilliant, but it won’t disappoint!
Also, please support by adding the book to your shelf; it means a lot to me. I’ll write this story with heart!
And to everyone—though this book borrows from the Foundation theme, I didn’t recreate it faithfully because it would get banned.
So some containment objects are my own creations or inspired by other games and films, and the numbering differs from the Foundation's!
I hope you understand!
Thank you!
