Chapter 15: The Box Experiment
Upon hearing the doctor’s words, the other end of the line remained silent for a long moment before responding.
“Based on the video you sent, that containment subject seems extremely dangerous!” the doctor said gravely.
“But he hasn’t shown any hostility toward humans,” came the reply.
“When the City Fire Squad detained him, they opened fire, and he didn’t retaliate,” the voice on the other end deepened.
“I believe he still needs to be observed further.”
Hearing this, the doctor merely shrugged.
“Very well.”
The voice spoke again.
“By the way, his classification seems quite high?”
The doctor adjusted his monocle.
“He gets along surprisingly well with the prison doctor.”
“I suspect they might be of the same classification.”
There was a sound of fingers tapping on a desk.
“They share the same classification, and the prison doctor possesses a faint trace of divinity!”
“So that means humans can possess divinity?”
The voice grew somewhat urgent.
The doctor shook his head calmly and said, “S292 is not a reliable reference.”
“Moreover, whether he truly has any divinity remains to be studied.”
The other side’s voice carried a tinge of disappointment, but more than that, anticipation—a conflicting mix.
“Accelerate research in this area!”
“If it can be confirmed that humans can have divinity, it would be a grand feast for mankind!”
The communication was quickly cut off.
The doctor’s gaze remained indifferent as he adjusted his monocle.
“That would also be a catastrophe for humanity.”
On his desk lay Lu Xiao’s flesh and blood analysis report.
At the end of the report, it read:
“The target’s flesh and blood suspected of containing divinity!”
The doctor shook his head, picked up the report, and without hesitation fed it into the shredder.
Then he rubbed his forehead.
The person who wrote that report had already been sent by his own hand for memory erasure.
He then took out a blank report.
“Target S292’s cell activity is abnormal, suspected to have been cursed!”
After completing the report, the doctor locked it away in his desk drawer.
He then called in the staff.
“Immediately begin experiments on container S292!”
…
Soon, Lu Xiao was brought to a special containment chamber.
He looked around the triple-layered containment, eyes filled with curiosity.
The chamber resembled three boxes of different sizes nested within each other.
The largest box encased two smaller ones, like Russian dolls.
Each room was furnished differently.
Lu Xiao was led into the smallest one.
The staff said to him,
“Number S292, you will be contained here for the next seven days.”
After the instructions, the staff closed the door.
Once they left, Lu Xiao began examining the room.
It was small, even somewhat cramped.
A large floor-to-ceiling window on the wall offered a view into the next room.
Lu Xiao stared blankly, then sat down on the iron bed in the center.
Meanwhile, before the surveillance monitors, the doctor gave orders.
“In one day, send two expendables to provoke S292.”
On screen, Lu Xiao sat on the bed, drowsy.
His head drooped, and soon faint snoring was heard.
“Has he fallen asleep just like that?” a staff member said in disbelief.
“An obvious result,” came the reply.
And so, Lu Xiao spent the first day in the containment chamber.
The next morning, a raucous noise entered Lu Xiao’s ears.
He slowly opened his eyes and glanced at the window on the wall.
Through his line of sight, two humans wearing yellow vests were laughing boisterously.
Their voices were loud.
“Old Wang! This room is way more comfortable than our cell!” one said, lying on a soft sofa.
The man called Old Wang held a wine glass filled with a bright red liquid.
“Never thought there’d be red wine here! Hahaha!” he laughed heartily.
“We two death row inmates are treated like this! Never even dreamed of it!”
Old Wang sneered.
“That guy in the suit and sunglasses told me if I stay in this hellhole for thirty days, my case would be dismissed!”
“I’ve been here thirteen days already, seventeen more and I’m out!” the other teased.
“Old Wang, you don’t really believe his nonsense, do you?”
“With your murder case, being executed thirty times wouldn’t be enough!”
Old Wang said nothing, just slowly sipped his wine.
The other suddenly said,
“By the way, I heard that the kid next door hit day thirty yesterday!”
“Don’t know if he got out—I haven’t seen him since!”
Old Wang’s eyes narrowed as he said solemnly,
“What did that kid do?”
The man thought carefully.
“He’s said to have molested over a dozen children, originally sentenced to death!”
Upon hearing this, Old Wang spat.
“Trash like that!”
Criminals of this sort were the most despised even within prison walls.
The two voices were not actually loud, but to Lu Xiao’s ears, they were deafening.
Clearly, the room was equipped with some device to amplify sound.
Lu Xiao grew irritated by the noise.
He raised a fist and shattered the glass window.
The two chatting men were startled by the sound of glass breaking.
From their perspective, they could not see inside Lu Xiao’s small room.
Suddenly, a figure appeared—it was quite intimidating.
Lu Xiao brushed the glass shards off himself, smiling as he approached them.
“Friends, you’re disturbing my rest. Could you please keep your voices down?”
He wore a friendly smile.
The two glanced at each other and burst into loud laughter.
“Old Wang! Did you hear that? This kid wants us to be quiet!”
“Hahaha! I’m not deaf—I heard that perfectly!”
Old Wang strode forward and grabbed Lu Xiao by the collar.
“Kid! I don’t know where you came from, but if you keep talking nonsense—”
“I won’t mind stuffing you back into your mother’s womb!”
He looked at Lu Xiao with contempt.
The other man watched the scene like a spectator.
“Old Wang, take it easy—if you scare this little friend, that wouldn’t be good.”
Old Wang shot him a glare before turning back to Lu Xiao.
“Kid, while I’m in a good mood, you better apologize and pretend none of this ever happened!”
“Otherwise…”
Before he could finish, disbelief flashed across his face.
Agony made him instantly release Lu Xiao’s collar.
He took a few steps back, eyes wide with terror.
Lu Xiao grinned.
“You really are too noisy!”
His smile was eerie as he held a bloody, mangled object in his hand.
That bloody, mangled thing was Old Wang’s tongue.
