Chapter 13: Do You Wish to Die?
After taking a shower, Lin Yu checked his phone and found there was no signal or internet connection.
“Looks like the signal towers have been destroyed.”
As he entered the hall, a group of people surrounded him.
“Brother, you’re really heartless,” one of them said.
“That attribute fruit is so important, and you just used a bit of food to trade us all away? Are we beggars to be tossed aside like this?”
“Exactly! You’d better return all the attribute fruits to us.”
Each person was armed with quite a few weapons—clubs, steel pipes, fire axes, and the like.
“Kid, you’d better hand over all the attribute fruits. Once the government clears the zombies, we can cover up your killings for you,” said a fat, broad-faced man in a suit.
“Hah! Do you want to die?” Lin Yu flashed a broad, sinister grin.
Apparently, killing two people yesterday hadn’t scared them at all.
“Big brother, please, return the attribute fruits to us. We won’t survive otherwise,” a few people suddenly knelt down, crying out.
They were just trying to intimidate him with their numbers earlier.
Seeing that he was about to lose his temper, they immediately backed down.
“I didn’t force anyone in yesterday’s deal. Keep pushing it and I won’t be polite.”
“Get lost!”
A harsh shout made everyone shudder.
Lin Yu ignored them, took Chen Jing’er by the hand, and walked to the door, beckoning to Huang Mao.
“Boss, what’s up?” Huang Mao grinned obsequiously as he hurried over.
“Open the door,” Lin Yu ordered.
“Ah!”
Huang Mao was startled. There were many zombies outside.
Several had passed by the hotel entrance earlier that morning, scaring them into silence.
“Ah what? Open the door!” Lin Yu frowned.
“But the zo—zombies!” Huang Mao stammered, fear evident in his voice.
“You all know how much food you have. Once it’s gone, you’ll die too.”
“Here’s a friendly piece of advice: while the zombies aren’t too strong yet, grab your tools and work together. You can easily kill them, and maybe get stronger.”
With that, Lin Yu ignored the crowd.
His sharp gaze fixed on Huang Mao: “If you don’t want to go out, guard this door well. We’ll be back later.”
“Okay, okay,” Huang Mao said nervously.
Lin Yu’s gaze was so fierce it seemed deadly, making Huang Mao’s legs weak.
Trembling, Huang Mao opened the door quietly, afraid of attracting zombies.
As soon as Lin Yu and the others stepped outside, Huang Mao hurried to lock the door.
“Wait, we want to go out too.”
The couple Lin Yu had saved yesterday stepped forward resolutely.
“You can only protect your original intentions by becoming stronger.”
Lin Yu’s words from yesterday echoed in their minds.
Coupled with what he just said about killing zombies to get stronger, the two exchanged a glance and quickly decided.
They wanted to kill zombies and get stronger too.
Each carried two kitchen knives they had secretly taken from the hotel kitchen the day before.
Seeing the knives, Huang Mao dared not be arrogant and let them out as well.
The rest in the hall remained inactive.
Kill those terrifying zombies? Were they crazy? Let whoever wanted to die go ahead. They just wanted to survive and wait for government rescue.
No matter how fierce the zombies, could they be stronger than bullets? They didn’t believe it.
Lin Yu admired the young couple who came out afterward.
As for the others’ thoughts, he could roughly guess them.
What they didn’t know was that all high-powered firearms worldwide were restricted by the laws of nature.
For example, shells were all neutralized, becoming dud rounds. Missiles were out of the question.
Currently, only small-caliber pistols with limited power were usable.
Facing the overwhelming numbers of zombies, the government couldn’t rescue them anytime soon.
Moreover, nuclear energy had lost its effect, absorbed by mutated beasts, transforming into even more terrifying creatures.
By the mid-apocalypse, humanity’s greatest threat was no longer zombies, but those horrifying mutants.
Especially those absorbing nuclear energy, who mercilessly slaughtered humans.
That was humanity’s bleakest hour.
The Cherry Blossom Kingdom was shattered and sank into the sea after being attacked by a monstrous mutant.
Completely annihilated.
“In the apocalypse, no one is reliable but yourself.”
Lin Yu, with three minor followers, had just stepped onto the street when four or five zombies spotted them, roaring and charging.
Lin Yu was here to level up, so he didn’t hold back, smashing a steel pipe down.
“Bang!”
A skull cracked open, and the zombie’s body lunged forward two meters before collapsing.
“You three, finish them off. After killing, check if there’s a crystal core inside their heads—that’s what boosts your strength.”
As Lin Yu cleared the area, he instructed them.
He then led the three into a dead-end alley.
Swinging the pipe, he shattered both arms of a zombie, then kicked it hard, intentionally sending it toward the others.
“Boom!”
The zombie crashed heavily in front of them.
Despite lacking arms, it howled and climbed up, charging at the three.
The young couple’s names were Liu Yu and Yang Shanshan.
Though terrified, they gripped their kitchen knives tightly, eyes fixed on the approaching zombie.
As for Chen Jing’er, she was pale with fear.
She had followed Lin Yu out with no tools, now hastily hiding behind the couple.
“Shanshan, I’m cutting its neck, you cut its legs!” Liu Yu shouted, launching the attack.
Without arms, the zombie was much less dangerous.
“Crack!”
Nervous, Liu Yu missed the target, the knife caught between the zombie’s teeth.
He yelled, “Shanshan, hurry!”
“Okay!”
Yang Shanshan’s teeth chattered, but she charged forward without hesitation, swinging the knife.
Eyes closed, she struck repeatedly, five or six times, but still hadn’t severed the zombie’s legs.
“Bang!”
Suddenly, a heavy iron shovel slammed into the zombie’s head.
Seizing the chance, Liu Yu kicked the zombie down and pulled the knife from its mouth, delivering a fatal cut.
“Glug.”
The zombie’s head rolled out, blood spurting.
“Ugh!”
The three nearly vomited at the gruesome sight.
Still, they didn’t relax, backing against each other, gasping and nervously watching their surroundings.
Seeing the three cooperate to kill the armless zombie, Lin Yu nodded slightly.
Chen Jing’er’s start had been shaky, but she had the sense to grab a shovel and land a heavy blow—a significant improvement.
“Bang!”
Another skull cracked.
Lin Yu was startled.
Chen Jing’er smashed the dead zombie’s head again, revealing a white crystal core inside.
Pale and suppressing nausea, she pried the core out with the shovel.
She ran to Lin Yu, offering it like a prize.
Lin Yu refused it.
He looked at the three and said, “Just like before, work together to kill. I’ll send two at a time. As for the crystal cores, split them evenly among the three of you.”
