To be honest, the moment I saw that hedgehog in such a state, I wasn’t scared at all. On the contrary, I stupidly pointed at it and exclaimed in surprise, “Master Chen, look! This hedgehog… it’s standing up!”

Hearing my words, Master Chen’s expression froze in disbelief.

He looked at me incredulously and said, “What?”

Only then did I fully register the bizarre sight. The hedgehog, with an unsettling grin, suddenly stood upright. My voice involuntarily trembled as I said, “Damn! Master Chen… this hedgehog…”

Quickly recovering, Master Chen grabbed the hunting rifle off the ground and turned to aim at the hedgehog behind us.

Bang!

He pulled the trigger, the gunshot echoing through the air.

Birds fluttered in the forest, insects chirped, and birdsong filled the trees.

In that instant, I saw the once creepy smiling hedgehog’s body instantly shatter into pieces with the gunshot.

Its fragments fell to the ground with a series of soft plopping sounds.

“*Huff, huff*!” Master Chen panted heavily, his teeth grinding fiercely.

“Master Chen!” I shouted instinctively.

He cursed under his breath, “Damn it! I knew something was off! We’ve been cursed by that evil god!”

My heart suddenly sank.

Before I could say anything more, the surrounding forest erupted with howls of wolves—one after another—growing louder and closer.

Awooo~

Awoooo~

With each howl becoming clearer, I could feel the wolves closing in on us!

“Sanqi, get inside quickly! The wolves heard the gunshots and they’re coming this way!” Master Chen urgently called me as we hurried into the house.

“Okay!”

I replied and immediately stopped focusing on anything else, following Master Chen into the house.

After a while, from the window inside the room, I saw the nearby forest.

Soon, countless pairs of eerie green eyes flickered in the darkness. The eyes blinked and shimmered, accompanied by hoarse whimpers and swallowing sounds echoing in our ears.

Despite this, I wasn’t afraid, for the house we lived in was incredibly sturdy.

I refused to believe these wolves could break in and devour us.

“Sanqi! Don’t panic!” Master Chen comforted me seriously.

I said nothing. Honestly, I wanted to tell him I wasn’t scared at all!

Standing by the bedside, Da Han showed no fear either. Instead, he craned his neck to look outside, as if trying to judge how many wolves there were.

After observing with Master Chen for some time, I realized the wolves were merely pacing back and forth in the forest, baring their teeth, without any intention of rushing forward.

Upon reflection, I understood these wolves had been drawn by the gunshots.

Wolves are animals that value a swift, fatal strike. Since they had no idea what was inside the house, they dared not charge recklessly.

Relaxing slightly, I whispered, “Master Chen, I think they won’t actually come up here, right? Our house is so solid; unless they’re confident, they won’t come in!”

But Master Chen kept staring coldly outside and said, “Not necessarily.”

“Not necessarily?” I asked, surprised.

He nodded, “Yes. Sanqi, your thinking isn’t wrong. Wolves do prefer a one-shot kill, but you forgot—they’re pack animals, and every pack has an alpha wolf. Once the alpha gives the order, even if a one-shot kill isn’t possible, the entire pack will attack!”

I quickly understood what Master Chen meant: wolves are indeed such creatures.

“Let’s just wait,” Master Chen said, motioning for me to fill his gourd with wine while he loaded gunpowder into the rifle.

As I approached the gourd, almost instinctively, I grabbed a nearby ladle and took a big gulp for myself.

Immediately, I felt a burning sensation at my temples, my pores all opening at once. My cheeks flushed hot, and I gasped for breath.

With the gourd full of wine, I walked over to Master Chen.

He smiled at me as he took the bottle.

“Good! Sanqi, now you smoke and drink! You’re not far from being a true hunter!”

My head spun dizzily.

Glancing outside again and confirming the wolves weren’t rushing in yet, I said drunkenly, “Master Chen, what exactly is going on with this evil god? You said we’re cursed by it?”

“Mm.”

He nodded, took a deep swig from the gourd, and said, “Sanqi, do you know why our traps never catch anything? At first, I thought it was just bad luck, but now I realize—it’s because of the shrine we encountered earlier! That thing is messing with us, deliberately making sure we can’t catch any prey and then haunting us! It wants us dead in this forest! Even the wolf pack outside shows that clearly!”

“Because of what…”

Mid-sentence, I suddenly remembered the skeletal remains of that man Master Chen had thrown away like trash. I said, “Could it be that the evil god is angry because we discarded that man’s bones?”

“Sigh.” Master Chen sighed deeply. “It’s partly my fault. At first, I thought those bones belonged to just some ordinary person who died in the old forest—there are many deaths there for various reasons. But now, it seems not. Maybe… that man was the guardian of this evil god! Now that the evil god has its eyes on us, I don’t even think the Five Mountain Lords can help us.”

He paused, then said, “This time… we’re really in deep trouble.”

Hearing his last words, my heart started pounding violently.

The evil god has set its sights on us!

Damn!

If it were just wild beasts or animals, I wouldn’t be so terrified.

But this…

It’s an evil god that can’t be touched or killed even by gunfire.

Just as I didn’t know what to do, sudden wolf howls burst outside again—shorter, more forceful than before, shaking the leaves.

Before I could say a word, Master Chen’s expression turned grave as he raised the rifle.

In a hoarse voice he said, “The alpha wolf has spoken! It’s ordering the pack to attack!”
