Chapter 37: A Frenzied Scavenging Spree, Five Trucks Loaded to the Brim!
"Alright, I’ve smoothed things over. Let’s head into the city and start hauling supplies!"
Liu Yi looked at him with half-belief. "Did you really get it sorted?"
Li Xingyue patted his chest. "Would I lie to you? We just need to go and start loading up. Let’s move!"
Li Xingyue climbed into the driver’s seat, the others piled in, and he floored the gas pedal, sending the vehicle bolting forward. Before long, they arrived at the location where Gui Ye was waiting.
As soon as they stepped out of the car, Li Xingyue prepared to introduce them to Gui Ye. To his surprise, Gui Ye jogged over, beaming, and shook each of their hands in turn. "Hello everyone, hello! My name is Gui Ye. I’ve heard all about you from my brother. Just treat this place like your own home, take whatever you need!"
This performance left the group completely bewildered. Li Xingyue was equally stunned; this kid was truly blunt—or rather, truly easygoing.
Huang Ya quietly sidled up to Li Xingyue, leaning in to whisper, "Old Li, what’s going on? He’s this easy to talk to? And he called you his brother?"
Gui Ye turned his head toward Huang Ya. "That’s right, I’m his brother!"
Huang Ya let out a startled curse. "How sharp are your ears?"
Li Xingyue waved his hand dismissively. "Enough, stop the chatter. Let’s get in the cars and head to the nearest shopping mall."
They got back in and headed straight for the closest mall, which was only a few minutes away. Once there, Li Xingyue began assigning tasks. "Huang Ya, you and Liu Er go find four good trucks. The bigger the better, with massive cargo space. Liu Yi, you and I will start moving supplies to the entrance with the smaller vehicles. Let’s get to work!"
At his command, everyone sprang into action.
Gui Ye hurried over to tug at Li Xingyue’s sleeve. "Brother, you didn't tell me what I should do?"
"You? Uh, why don't you just help us haul the supplies?"
"You got it!" Gui Ye agreed and dashed into the mall.
The mall had gained a bit of life, though it was being steadily drained of its stock. Roughly an hour later, Huang Ya and his partner returned with the trucks, pulling them up in front of the mall. Li Xingyue stepped out and was immediately taken aback; what greeted him were five heavy-duty, enclosed cargo trucks, each over ten meters long.
"Damn, you two are absolute legends!" Li Xingyue exclaimed. "Alright, everyone, pitch in! Let’s fill these trucks to the brim!"
Daily necessities, food, drinks—anything in short supply was tossed into the trucks without hesitation. After two or three hours, all five vehicles were packed tight.
Li Xingyue dusted off his clothes. "Shift’s over. Back to the city!"
The five of them each took a truck. Just as Li Xingyue settled into the driver’s seat and buckled his belt, the passenger door opened. Gui Ye hopped in, buckled up as well, and said with a look of pure excitement, "Let’s go!"
"Uh, Gui Ye, you’re coming back with me?"
Gui Ye turned to look at him, nodding repeatedly. "Yeah, Brother! I want to go into the city and take a look."
"Fine, but once we're inside, don't wander off. Stay by my side."
"You got it, Brother!"
Li Xingyue shook his head, fumbled for a moment to start the truck, and then set off to catch up with the others. Because the trucks were fully loaded, they couldn't build up much speed, and it took two hours to reach the entrance of Free City.
It was a little past two in the afternoon. There were many groups entering and exiting the gates, and they all took notice of the five heavy trucks approaching from the distance.
"Damn, look at the size of those trucks!"
"Are those guys idiots? Who looks for rigs like that?"
"Exactly. Who would rent those? They guzzle fuel and are probably worth less than an off-road vehicle."
"Hahaha, maybe they actually managed to bring back five truckloads of supplies?"
"Pfft, hahaha, you don't even believe that yourself!"
Everyone who saw them couldn't help but mock them. The guards at the gate, the Arbiters, merely sneered, glancing at their identification cards before waving them through. They didn't even think to check the cargo holds, naturally assuming the group was just fulfilling a vehicle-retrieval mission.
The group ignored the others and drove straight to the plaza of the C-District Zombie Hunting Bureau. Once they arrived, Li Xingyue sent Liu San inside to call for help.
Liu San soon emerged with a staff member, but the moment the employee saw the five massive trucks, his smile vanished, and he turned to head back inside. Liu San hurriedly grabbed him, convincing him with some effort to follow them to the trucks.
"Don't go just yet. Let me open the doors, and you'll see," Liu San said, heading toward the rear of the cargo hold.
The staff member looked impatient. "I’m telling you, we don't accept vehicles like this. They take up too much space and aren't worth anything—nobody rents them!"
Liu San threw open the rear doors, and the goods inside immediately spilled out. The staff member’s eyes widened, and he hurried to the back of the truck. Upon seeing the mountain of supplies, he froze in place, utterly stunned.
Huang Ya waved his hand in front of the man’s face. "Oi, what are you staring at? Go get people! All these trucks are full. Your C-District crew definitely won't be enough—hurry up and call for backup!"
"Ah? Oh! Yes, yes! I'll go call for help right now!"
The staff member finally snapped out of it. With an excited expression, he ran into the lobby, grabbed the communicator, and roared, "Quick, get someone here, damn it! The C-District branch urgently needs a massive amount of manpower!!!"
After hanging up, the staff member was still buzzing with excitement, his heart racing. He muttered to himself, "My god, how long has it been since I’ve seen a haul like this..."
Meanwhile, the other districts receiving his distress call were baffled. What was going on? Was someone attacking the Zombie Hunting Bureau?
The leader of the B-District, after hearing the report, stood up immediately. "Leave a few behind; everyone else, come with me to C-District!"
Soon, nearly forty or fifty personnel from the Zombie Hunting Bureau arrived at the C-District branch, followed by a number of armed guards. The young man who had called for help had just caught his breath when he saw the swarm of colleagues rushing in, led by a minor commander from B-District.
*What on earth is going on? Why are there so many people?*
The young man jogged over. "Commander, why did you come yourself? This is a small matter, you could have just sent a few people."
The commander was also confused. "Didn't you say it was a major emergency and that you needed a massive amount of manpower? I thought someone was launching an assault on the branch!"
The young man realized he had been too flustered and caused a misunderstanding, so he quickly explained. The commander, finally at ease, let out a cold snort and took half the men back with him.
Li Xingyue saw that time was being wasted and urged the young man to get moving. Only then did the man react, calling for people to begin unloading and tallying the cargo. As the workers saw the immense amount of supplies, they were all struck with amazement, but they kept their thoughts to themselves and set to work.
Li Xingyue was lost in thought when he felt a tap on his shoulder. He turned around, only to find it was Huang Qian!
