Chapter 122: Easier Said Than Done

Xu An’an finally allowed herself to relax; this was the Xue Shengnan she knew. She murmured, “I have no regrets for what I have given, but if you betray me, I will not hesitate to let go.”
These were the words Xue Shengnan had said to her before she ever fell in love.
Jiang Lie, sitting nearby, heard every word clearly.
He was thoughtful.
At that moment, the entire engagement banquet erupted because of Xue Shengnan’s words. Tang Jin’s face turned pale, and he wanted to rush forward to refute.
The large screen, which was supposed to show the couple’s loving moments, instead displayed Tang Jin in intimate embraces and even scandalous videos with different women!
The scene descended into chaos.
The families of both sides began arguing fiercely.
Tang Jin sat there with a sullen expression. He still wanted to salvage the situation, but it was clear that was impossible, so he ran to find Xue Shengnan.
Having just stepped down from the stage, Xue Shengnan’s face was expressionless.
Yet her eyes were red-rimmed.
“Step aside.”
“Shengnan, listen to me first. Those women came to me, I didn’t—”
“At this point, you still want to blame others for your mistakes?” Xue Shengnan’s eyes were full of disappointed anger. For the first time, she truly saw what a despicable and vile person Tang Jin was.
She regretted ever giving him a chance.
He had defeated her utterly.
Facing Xue Shengnan’s clear, dark eyes filled with disappointment and sorrow, Tang Jin averted his gaze, unable to find words to defend himself.
Xue Shengnan was exhausted and unwilling to stay any longer.
She handed the remaining matters over to her family.
Tang Jin blocked Xue Shengnan’s path and started playing the victim: “Shengnan, you don’t know how hard it was for me to get to where I am today. For the sake of performance, I had to deal with those women. I only wanted to earn more money so that when you married me, you could live a life of luxury.”
“Everything I did was for you!”
“Heh, it sounds better than it actually is,” Xu An’an couldn’t stand it any longer. She stood in front of Xue Shengnan and glared at Tang Jin.
A mocking smile curved the corner of her lips. “Whether it’s for Shengnan or for yourself, you know the truth in your heart.”
“If you still have any shame, step aside now, or bear the consequences.”
Tang Jin swallowed nervously. He was afraid—not of Xu An’an, but of Jiang Lie standing beside her.
A single glance from Jiang Lie was enough to frighten him terribly.
“Shengnan, calm down first. When you’ve settled yourself, we can talk properly.”
With that, Jiang Lie turned and swiftly left.

Xu An’an looked at Xue Shengnan with concern.
Xue Shengnan forced a smile, her face pale. “Don’t worry, I’m fine. I just made a joke of myself in front of everyone.”
Suddenly, as if remembering something, Xue Shengnan went back on stage, causing some guests who were about to leave to stop. They sympathized with her and wanted to hear what she had to say.
Xu An’an was a little curious too.
Before speaking, Xue Shengnan steadied her emotions. “Today’s events have made a laughingstock of me. If none of you mind, please stay and continue with the meal.”
“Consider it a chance for us to make friends.”
The crowd praised Xue Shengnan’s composure. Tang Jin’s infidelity was condemned; he deserved no mercy.
They applauded enthusiastically, both in encouragement and admiration.
Xue Shengnan smiled faintly, then composedly stepped down and left the scene, wanting nothing more than to find a quiet place to sit.
Xu An’an wanted to follow but ultimately gave up the idea.
Jiang Lie raised an eyebrow. “Not going with her?”
“No. She probably wants to be alone right now.”
“If it were me, you’d better keep up.”
“Huh?”
Before Xu An’an could fully grasp Jiang Lie’s words, she watched him head toward the hotel’s exit, quickly following after.
On the way back, Jiang Lie noticed Xu An’an leaning against the wall, looking listless. He knew she was still worried about Xue Shengnan.
He instructed the driver to change course.
“Take us to the Rose Garden.”
When they arrived, Xu An’an snapped back to reality. Looking at the vast sea of bright red roses, she was stunned into silence.
Jiang Lie took Xu An’an’s hand and led her inside.
Surrounded by roses, they walked toward a building standing at the center, whose shape resembled a blooming rose.
Xu An’an had seen an introduction to the Rose Garden in a magazine before, calling it a sacred place for couples’ dates, requiring reservations at least a week in advance.
But why was there no one here now?
Curious, Xu An’an asked, “Second Master, is this your property?”
Jiang Lie pinched her cheek. “Smart girl. What reward do you want?”
Meeting those clear, dark eyes, Xu An’an was momentarily taken aback. She awkwardly turned her head and subtly withdrew her hand.
“Anyone with eyes can guess.”
“I don’t want a freebie.”

“There’s no such thing as a free lunch.”
“Looks like you’ve been fooled many times.”
“...”
Unable to argue with Jiang Lie, Xu An’an quickened her pace.
Watching her slender figure, Jiang Lie’s lips curved slightly. He strode along behind her at a leisurely pace.
The manager, upon learning Jiang Lie had arrived, immediately led the staff to the entrance to welcome them.
Seeing Xu An’an with him, everyone was momentarily stunned, then greeted them in unison, “Welcome, Second Master. Welcome, Young Mistress.”
Mistaken for the young mistress, Xu An’an looked at Jiang Lie, signaling him to explain.
Jiang Lie feigned ignorance and let the manager lead the way.
Xu An’an frowned and hurried after him. “I don’t believe you didn’t hear that.”
“What did you say?”
Jiang Lie put on an innocent face. “Hear what?”
If anyone was a rogue, Xu An’an truly admired Jiang Lie. She muttered softly, “Keep pretending, keep pretending, and don’t say a word.”
Jiang Lie heard everything clearly, his eyes twinkling.
The manager, standing nearby, was more convinced than ever that Xu An’an was the future lady of the house. Jiang Lie never brought women here before.
He had to curry favor with the future mistress!
Their meal was set outdoors, surrounded by blooming roses. The sun was setting, the sky painted with vast fiery clouds, bathing everything in a crimson glow.
The breathtaking scene intoxicated the senses.
Xu An’an rested her cheek on one hand, her spirits soaring to a peak.
“The weather should be good tomorrow.”
“There’s a saying: red clouds in the morning mean rain in the evening; red clouds at night mean a sunny day ahead.”
Jiang Lie shrugged ambiguously. “We’ll stay here overnight. Is there anything you want to do? Tell me—I’d like to experience it.”
Actually, Xu An’an did have something in mind.
“These roses smell so lovely. If we made rose cakes with them, they’d surely taste wonderful.”
“So, can we pick the roses here?”
Jiang Lie nearly choked; he hadn’t expected Xu An’an to be so unromantic. He nodded, “Sure, you can pick any flowers you want here.”
