Chapter 90 Sis, You Like Him Too, Don’t You?
Leaving the villa where they had been filming, Xu Anan finally realized that the second leg of the shoot had taken place in an old town, yet they had never once come out to wander through it.
At that moment, the two of them were walking along the old town’s streets, with little shops lining both sides.
Tourists streamed by in an endless flow, making the place lively and bustling.
Xu Anan was a little curious. Why were they taking this route to the parking lot? Why hadn’t the car been parked in the villa itself? Wouldn’t that have been more convenient?
She voiced the question in her mind.
Jiang Li looked away awkwardly. “Mind your own business when it comes to Second Master Jiang.”
Catching the flush on the handsome man’s face, Xu Anan pressed her lips together and snickered under her breath. “I see—you just wanted to stroll through the old town and are telling me to mind my own business. What are you, some awkward teenage boy?”
Still, Xu Anan had nothing she particularly wanted to buy, so she pulled out her phone to check her messages. These past few days, work should have piled up quite a bit.
After checking her email, she curiously opened Weibo.
Though their travel show was terrible, its popularity was high.
Netizens were all mocking it: a variety program sold as a travel show, yet it kept filming inside a villa.
Xu Anan didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.
Of course, she agreed with them. But the director had never been in the variety-show business to begin with, and the investors cared only about traffic and buzz.
As long as there was talk value, that was enough. So the show was full of things to complain about.
Xu Anan scrolled through her phone, wanting to see whether Ning Xiyue’s remarks from last night had caused any impact.
But online, all was calm.
In truth, there had already been a storm that morning, but Xu Anan had been asleep and missed it. By now, searching for it brought up little heat at all.
Ning Xiyue had originally wanted to use the opportunity to get Xu Anan into trouble, but instead, trouble had landed on her own head.
The director stepped forward to explain and firmly support Xu Anan.
Even Ning Xiyue’s agency came out to clarify that Ning Xiyue had merely misspoken and that the rest of her itinerary had not been affected.
Even so, being publicly slapped in the face by her own agency was enough to make Ning Xiyue a laughingstock across the internet.
“Watch out!”
A bicycle came straight toward them.
Jiang Li yanked Xu Anan, who had been staring at her phone, into his arms and, at the same time, took her phone away. “Walking and staring at your phone? What kind of eyes do you have?”
Xu Anan curved her lips. “Well, I’ve got Second Master Jiang right beside me.”
Jiang Li clicked his tongue, but the corners of his mouth were already tugging nearly to his ears.
“Enough nonsense. Keep your eyes on the road.”
“Second Master, can we go look in this shop?” Xu Anan spotted a small antique shop with a distinctive charm and tugged Jiang Li along.
Jiang Li made a token refusal, but his body honestly followed her inside.
The shop was filled with all sorts of little antiques, along with woven necklaces, bracelets, rings, and other trinkets, though the prices were somewhat steep.
The owner sat behind the counter yawning, as if forced to be open for business, which left the shop completely empty of customers.
Xu Anan examined item after item, but every time she saw the price, she could only set it back down in regret.
“Tch. Just looking and not buying—what’s the point?” Jiang Li folded his arms and followed close behind her.
Xu Anan’s face warmed. She shot him a reproachful look. “What do you know? That’s the fun of shopping. Who says going into a store means you have to buy something?”
“Of course, a big man like you wouldn’t understand the pleasure of shopping.”
With that, she turned to leave.
But Jiang Li caught her wrist. “Nothing you like?”
“Nothing.”
“Really nothing?”
“Bro, do you even get it? Cut the nonsense and just pay up.” The shop owner really couldn’t stand it anymore, mostly because they were disturbing his nap.
Jiang Li sent him a frosty glance.
The owner was so frightened he nearly jumped to his feet to apologize.
Who would have thought Jiang Li would simply pull out a card, buy everything Xu Anan had looked at, and then toss it to her with obvious disdain.
“Take it.”
“Since when does a woman carry things for a man?”
“No way, sis—this guy is obviously trying to court you. He deliberately bought the things you liked to give to you, but he’s too embarrassed to say it, all stiff and awkward!” The owner had made a killing and was so happy he could barely contain himself, chattering away without a lid on his mouth. “Sis, you like this guy too, don’t you?”
The two of them looked at each other, both hastily averting their eyes.
Xu Anan ran out of the shop first.
Jiang Li looked back. “If you can talk, then talk more.”
He bought some more things, filled in the address, and had the owner send them by courier.
The owner had thought Jiang Li might blow up, since he had hit the mark so completely, only to end up earning even more money: “As expected, men in love are all sharp-tongued but soft-hearted.”
Xu Anan walked ahead for a while, then realized Jiang Li hadn’t followed, so she stopped to wait.
After a bit, she finally saw Jiang Li strolling along slowly with his hands in his pockets.
“Why are you so slow?”
“Because he was spouting nonsense, and I took a little time to give him a beating.” Jiang Li’s tone was casual. “You don’t think he was talking nonsense?”
Xu Anan’s face heated up. “Ahem. Good hit.”
Jiang Li was speechless.
After returning to the city, Xu Anan made a special trip to the new hospital to see her mother. Only then did she learn that everything Jiang Li had arranged was the best and most expensive available.
Xu Anan had been thinking of paying the fees, but the doctor told her, “Second Master said to wait and settle the costs after Madam Xu wakes up.”
“Huh? That works too?”
“There’s nothing that doesn’t work within Second Master’s rules.” The doctor smiled.
Xu Anan felt that the doctor’s words made perfect sense. Then she asked about her mother’s condition: “Is there still a chance she’ll wake up?”
She had never dared ask Dr. Wang before, because he belonged to Shen Ying and would never tell her the truth.
The doctor sighed lightly. “I can only say that Madam Xu’s will to live is very strong. Otherwise, according to the previous treatment plan, Madam Xu would probably already have...”
“Miss Xu, if you have enough evidence, you could absolutely sue the previous doctors for attempted murder.”
At that, Xu Anan’s gaze sank. Boundless killing intent spread around her, and she clenched her fingers tightly.
In fact, all these years, Xu Anan had done her best to gather evidence of every kind.
But unfortunately, none of it was truly important evidence.
After all, Shen Ying was not an easy woman to deal with. She guarded against Xu Anan at every turn, and everything Xu Anan was allowed to know was only what Shen Ying wanted her to know.
...
The Xu residence.
Mother and daughter were having dinner.
Neither of them spoke. The room was very quiet, until Xu Anan appeared.
“You bitch, you actually dare come back!” Xu Wanwan said furiously. “Mom, she hit me on the show! Hurry and bring out the whip and beat her to death!”
Xu Anan remained calm. She walked to the dining table, elegantly pulled out a chair, and sat down.
With a smile, she told the servant beside her, “Set out a bowl and chopsticks.”
The servant was at a loss and hurriedly looked to Shen Ying.
Shen Ying’s face was grim, but she still nodded.
At the same time, she did not forget to restrain Xu Wanwan. Since Xu Anan had the nerve to return so confidently, there had to be more to it than met the eye. “You’ve been swallowing humiliation all these years. It must have been hard on you.”
“Just average. But I’ve remembered every lesson you taught me. One day, I’ll return them to you in full.” Xu Anan smiled, though not quite smiling. “Wouldn’t you agree?”
