Chapter 29: Did She Steal Someone’s Role?
Because of the medicine Tang Jinnan provided, Qin Fei had no objections at all to letting them stay. Of course, she was also aware that her own opinion probably wouldn’t matter much anyway.
The fact that Qin Hongfei was injured was kept from her—it was hidden!
Thanks to the medicine, the wounds on Qin Fei’s face healed remarkably quickly. She was soon camera-ready and, in just two or three days, finished filming her bit part and received her pay.
But the happiness didn’t last long! Qin Hongfei soon received a call from the Qin family. Grandma Qin asked the two sisters to return home, her tone unusually stern.
The joy of reclaiming her role vanished from Qin Fei’s face, replaced by worry.
Qin Hongfei, on the other hand, remained calm—she would deal with whatever came her way.
The sisters packed up and returned to the old Qin house. They had arrived with nothing but themselves, but went back with two more people in tow.
Back at Qinhuai Street, Qin Hongfei handed Tang Jinnan the keys to the repair shop, then she and her sister headed straight for the family home. They arrived just in time for dinner. All the various branches of the Qin family were gathered around the table. Qin Hongfei noticed that Uncle Qin’s wife and her husband had already returned and were sitting there with grim expressions. She understood immediately but pretended not to notice. “Grandpa, Grandma, your call was so urgent that we thought something might have happened to you or Grandpa. We rushed back, worried sick!”
Grandma Qin’s expression had been unpleasant, but after hearing this—and seeing the sisters arrive breathless, not seeming to be lying—her mood softened. “Your grandpa and I are always at home. What could possibly happen to us? Have you eaten yet? Come and eat.”
Qin Fei wanted to protest—there was no need; just get to the point.
How could anyone eat in such an atmosphere? The tension was suffocating.
Qin Hongfei, however, remained composed, leading her sister to the table. “Second Aunt’s cooking just keeps getting better. This braised pork is delicious. Sis, you should learn from Second Aunt.”
Qin Fei was baffled. “Why don’t you learn?”
Qin Hongfei replied innocently, “I’m just not cut out for the kitchen.”
Qin Fei rolled her eyes fiercely. She’d originally not dared to touch the good dishes on the table, but after Qin Hongfei’s playful banter, she joined in and tried a piece. Her eyes lit up. “It really is delicious! Second Aunt, you’re amazing.”
The sisters took turns showering praise. There’s nothing more gratifying than having a table full of dishes loved by all. Second Aunt generously served each of them another piece of meat. “Eat more if you like it. Look how thin you both are.”
“Thank you, Second Aunt! Little brothers and sisters, you should eat more too,” Qin Hongfei said graciously, then shared some amusing stories from the film set, which captivated everyone at the table, young and old.
After dinner, the sisters took the initiative to help wash the dishes.
Having been invited to dinner, it was only right to pitch in with some chores.
Unable to hold back any longer, Aunt Qin slammed her chopsticks heavily on the table.
Qin Hongfei remained calm, though her eyes grew colder. So, she couldn’t hold it in any longer. Still, she wasn’t in a hurry to speak up.
Instead, Grandma Qin spoke first. “Hongfei, Fei, come here. I have something to ask you.”
The sisters had been expecting this and obediently went over. “Grandma, what is it?”
Grandma Qin glanced at Aunt Qin, then spoke. “I’ve heard that you not only lured loan sharks to cause trouble for Wanwan, but even stole a role from her friend. Worse, you shamelessly seduced the director so he’d give Qin Fei the part. Is it true?” Her face was grave.
Qin Fei’s eyes widened in shock.
She stole someone’s role?
When did that happen?
When had she ever been so capable, so bold as to steal someone’s part? She had no idea!
