Chapter Ninety-Five: The Place of Inheritance
Qian Renxue stepped forward and came to stand before the three of them, a thoughtful smile playing at the corners of her lips. She lifted a brow at Xiao Yu. “So? Sneaking out here for a little excitement?”
The moment she said it, Huo Wu and Ye Lingling both blushed scarlet.
Xiao Yu shot her an exasperated look. “What on earth is going through your head?”
“Only my first judgment of you, based on a deeper understanding of your character,” Qian Renxue said, looking rather pleased with herself. “It’s the middle of the night, and instead of sleeping in camp you run off out here. I’m honestly curious what exactly you’re trying to do.”
This girl’s temperament was probably inherited from her mother—somewhat obsessively so, to the point of being frightening. If he did not tell the truth, she would likely not let the matter rest.
Xiao Yu sighed inwardly. He did not know what was calling to him, but since it resonated with his martial soul, it must belong to the dark element. It was naturally incompatible with the light attribute of the Six-Winged Angel, so telling her would do no harm.
Thus Xiao Yu did not hide anything, and recounted the matter to Qian Renxue in full.
Upon hearing that it had actually been Xiao Yu’s martial soul guiding him here, Qian Renxue’s pupils contracted sharply. Generation after generation of her Angel Clan had awakened the Six-Winged Angel martial soul, and their research into divine martial souls had stretched back a thousand years. Something capable of calling to a divine martial soul and provoking a resonance was absolutely an existence that could stand beside a divine artifact.
“You really are lucky, aren’t you?” Qian Renxue glanced at Xiao Yu with a hint of envy, then looked around and said, “Are you sure the thing calling to your martial soul is here?”
Xiao Yu nodded, then took two steps forward to stand before the cliff wall. His martial soul entered his body, the fifth soul ring blazing brilliantly. Terrifying sword light suddenly burst forth from him and slammed fiercely into the seemingly solid rock face.
With a booming crash, countless stones were reduced to dust by Xiao Yu’s strike.
A cave entrance nearly three meters wide and close to seven meters high appeared before them.
“Be careful!”
The instant the opening appeared, Xiao Yu immediately felt a vast wave of soul power spreading out from within the cave, rushing straight toward them.
Huo Wu, with her lower soul power, and Ye Lingling, as a support-type soul master, were caught off guard. Hit head-on by that immense surge of soul power, they lost their footing and nearly fell to the ground.
Xiao Yu, with his martial soul manifested, was in somewhat better shape. He hurried to the two women, drew them into his arms, and spread his black wings downward to shield them beneath his feathers. Then he moved quickly toward the cave entrance, avoiding the direct brunt of the soul power.
Qian Renxue also promptly summoned her own martial soul. With the aid of the Six-Winged Angel, she barely managed to withstand the impact, though she could not help but give Xiao Yu a resentful glance.
This bastard spent all day flirting with her, and when something actually happened, he still went straight to protect his two little girlfriends first.
Xiao Yu did not notice her expression at the moment. He sensed the soul power surging endlessly from within the cave, and seeing that its fluctuations showed no sign of weakening, he lowered his voice and said to the two women, “I’ll go in and take a look. Stay here outside and wait for me properly.”
Having borne the terrifying impact head-on, both women were now pale. They also knew that with their own strength, they would never be able to withstand the soul power inside the cave. Even the fiery Huo Wu obediently nodded.
“Brother Xiao Yu, be careful!”
Ye Lingling thoughtfully tidied the hem of Xiao Yu’s clothes, which had become a little disheveled from the earlier impact, and said carefully, “Be careful.”
“Don’t worry.”
Xiao Yu smiled slightly, ruffling Ye Lingling’s little head, then beat the black wings behind him and rose into the air. Braving the incessant surges of soul power from within the cave, he advanced inward.
Seeing this, Qian Renxue let out a cold snort and flapped her wings as well, transforming into a golden meteor as she followed close behind.
Because of the soul power pressure, their progress was slow. It took them about twenty minutes to pass through the long, dark, narrow passage before the end suddenly opened up.
In the center of the broad open ground stood a massive stone altar. Towering steps led up to it, and six enormous statues stood on either side of the long staircase. The steps were covered in symbols like some celestial script, and the entire altar exuded a solemn and sacred atmosphere.
At that moment, Xiao Yu’s martial soul became incomparably excited. His blood surged, and every cell in his body seemed to be telling him to hurry and go up.
“Let’s go see.”
Xiao Yu turned and said to Qian Renxue. She nodded, and the wings behind them beat once more as the two of them flew straight toward the altar.
As they neared it, the soul pressure that had seemed ready to tear a person apart vanished in an instant. Freed from the obstruction, the two moved even faster, crossing the long stairway in just a few breaths.
The moment Xiao Yu stepped onto the center of the altar, a flash of white light filled his vision. In the next instant, he found himself within a vast palace.
The palace was somewhat dilapidated, with peeling walls, shattered bricks and tiles, and many of the beams and pillars already collapsed. It was a scene of devastation, yet it carried a deep, time-worn desolation.
Above the palace hung a gigantic throne, and seated upon it was a shadowy figure. Because it was far too illusory, Xiao Yu could not make out the figure’s appearance at all.
“This is the place of inheritance!”
As the successor of the Angel God, Qian Renxue blurted it out almost immediately.
“So, besides the little one who resonated with me, there is also a young lady who has inherited the Angel God’s legacy.”
The shadowy figure slowly spoke. Its voice was weak and hollow, and Xiao Yu felt as though it had suffered severe injuries.
The figure had instantly seen through her identity. Qian Renxue immediately judged that the other party was likely also a deity, and at once clasped her hands and bowed. “Greetings, senior. May I ask who you are?”
“I am the God of Death, Thanatos!”
Xiao Yu’s mouth twitched at the name. Was this merely a coincidence, or had that fellow also transmigrated to the Douluo Continent?
“So it is the senior God of Death!”
Indeed, he was a deity. Qian Renxue’s delicate body trembled slightly. Pointing at Xiao Yu, she could not help asking, “Senior, you called him here because you intended to choose him as your successor for your divine seat?”
“Successor to a divine seat? No, I am no longer able to pass on my divine seat.”
Thanatos’ voice was full of bitter laughter. “I was schemed against by treacherous enemies. My true body has already fallen, my divine seat shattered, and only a wisp of remnant soul remains. If not for this little one’s martial soul, which provoked such a strong resonance that I could barely mobilize a fragment of divine power to summon you here, I am afraid this remnant soul of mine would already have dispersed with the passage of time.”
“Even gods can fall?”
Qian Renxue covered her mouth in shock. She had always believed that once one broke through to level one hundred and inherited a divine seat, one would become an immortal being.
Compared to Qian Renxue’s astonishment, Xiao Yu was already mentally cursing in black lines. Framed by others, body destroyed, leaving only a remnant soul to cling to life—why did this sound more and more familiar the longer he heard it?
Damn it, this is the Douluo Continent, not the Battle Qi Continent. I may be surnamed Xiao, but I’m not called Flame Flame!
